A time ago, I got an email address. I don't remember making the decision. I just remember it being a very big deal. AOL was the place to be and instant messaging was the thing to do. My first 'handle' was JMAGIC15. Like most ninth grade girls, I used my basketball number, and MAGIC was what the boys called me on the court. Actually, just one boy called me that..once. But I took it to heart, like most ninth grade girls do.
Time passed, quickly or slowly, I don't really know, but it filled up with life and moved beyond instant messaging. Email became a little more sophisticated and somewhere along the way I picked up my new-ish address. Again, the decision was made for me. This time, by the brilliant minds at Google. They even suggested a password to go with my 'handle,' which I gratefully accepted. I hate making decisions.
So here I am, enjoying the passage of time, happy to have at least some of the decisions made for me. Meanwhile, in the MEANness of TIME, I'm trying to make other decisions, wishing one of the Google guys would set up a simple web site for just living. It would have cool job opportunities just a click away, with a completed resume (that self-updates) attached and pretty. There would be a world map link with a little boat point-and-clicker that would pop up plane tickets and travel specials (mostly free promotional bed-and-breakfast bike trips). The education tab (indicated by a little apple with a toothy worm smiling out at you) would put you in direct contact with the editors of all of the National Geographic magazines who are currently in dialogue about the importance of geography in elementary classrooms. Click on the Nalgene Bottle to access already filled-out applications for doing half-marathons and 10K's that would raise water and hunger awareness. These, of course, are sponsored by the musicians featured weekly (their respective tour schedules can be found under the music note. inquire about backstage passes on the Bandaid icon towards the bottom of the page). But the absolute best part of this site is the funding option guided by the phrase 'no money? no problem!' in green. Imagine: a scholarship for Living. for Being You. offered to the world, for the world. all in the name of story-making. because that seems to be the best way to spread joy: tell your story, dang it all.
So. Thank you, Google guys, for liking me enough to give me the best email address EVER! and the perfect password to boot. no one will ever guess it.
